One of the most common and effective applications of neurofeedback addresses ADD or ADHD. Individuals with these conditions frequently show a "slowing" pattern in their EEG because of their increased levels of Delta- or Theta-band activity. Since the 1970's, neurofeedback has been extensively researched and tested with ADD/ADHD and learning disabilities. Dr. Joel Lubar and his colleagues at the University of Tennessee and other researchers have demonstrated the effectiveness of retraining the brain by using neurofeedback to reduce ADD/ADHD symptoms.
Training to normalize patterns of brain activation has been shown to increase the trainee's ability to attend and to focus. Neurofeedback training for ADD/ADHD is usually associated with decreased impulsivity and hyperactivity, less moodiness, improved sleep, increased attention span and concentration and improved academic performance. One of the greatest advantages of neurofeedback training in treating ADD/ADHD is that it commonly reduces or eliminates the need for medication.
